FRTOL practical test. Pilots must pass this test to be permitted to transmit on an aircraft radio. This is normally taken towards the end of a PPL course, either before or after passing the PPL skill test, before applying for your PPL licence. It is also required for foreign pilots converting from an ICAO licence from another country.

The test location is Cotswold Aero Club, Gloucestershire Airport. Other locations at that airport or elsewhere may be possible by prior arrangement.

Allow 3 hours for the test, which is comprehensive and includes detailed briefing, preparation time, examination, discussion, debrief and paperwork.

The pre-requisites for student pilots are

a) Form SRG1171 signed by an instructor that the required training has been completed and the candidate is ready for test.

b) Communications theory exam passed and in-date.

If required, the communications exam can be taken as a written paper immediately prior to the practical exam for an extra fee.
